Profiteren van de laatste dagen van de zomer, op zondagochtend, ging een groep avontuurlijke RCC en Never Dry kajakkers op pad voor een tocht op de kronkelende Maas. We besloten om vanaf de club te peddelen om de ervaring wat pittiger te maken, waarbij we onder lage bruggen moesten varen en de boot over het Oostplein moesten dragen. Na terugkeer naar het water in de Rotterdamsche Admiraliteit marina (Boerengat), dreven we langs de rechteroever van de Maas en staken we onder de Willems- en Erasmusbruggen door met de stroming in ons voordeel.
Rond Delfshaven reisden we een paar minuten terug in de tijd terwijl we peddelden naast een oude zeilschip.
Daarna staken we de Maas over en stopten voor een zonnige lunchpauze op het quarantainestrand Heijplaat, een historisch gebied waar ooit zeelieden die met tropische ziekten aankwamen in quarantaine werden geplaatst. Rond deze tijd veranderde de stroming in ons voordeel: onze quarantaine werd opgeheven en met een schone gezondheidsverklaring voeren we terug. Helaas wachten de hongerige avonturiers nog steeds op de koekjes die Susanne beloofde mee te nemen voor de lunch.
Naast de natuurlijke fauna die gebruikelijk is op de Maas, zoals grote containerschepen, snelle watertaxi’s en toeristische speedboten, zagen we een gele waterbus zwemmen in de wateren rond het schip SS Rotterdam. Gelukkig leek geen van deze wezens verrast door de nieuwsgierige kajakkers die in de buurt dreven.
Onderweg vonden we de tijd om te poseren voor wat foto’s met de skyline van Rotterdam op de achtergrond. Dit jaar besloot Pedro, ondanks het aangename weer en het fantastische uitzicht, om niet te gaan zwemmen. Op de terugweg verzamelden Pedro, Pim en Susanne de energie om een snelle omweg door de oude haven te maken. Eindelijk, terug in de club, was het tijd om wat hete koffie te drinken en bij te komen terwijl we nadachten over ons volgende avontuur.
Eric, Gertjan, Ivo, Juliëtte, Marianne, Mike, Pim en Susanne, bedankt voor het gezelschap en de fijne tijd! Het was een fantastische zondag.
MAAS TRIP (19 SEPT ’21)

Taking advantage of the final days of summer, on Sunday morning, a group of adventurous RCC and Never Dry kayakers headed out for a trip on the winding Maas river. We decided to sail from the club to spice up the experience, requiring the paddlers to sail under low bridges and carry the boat over Oostplein. After returning to the water in the Rotterdamsche Admiraliteit marina (Boerengat), we drifted along the right bank of the Maas, crossing below the Willems and Erasmus bridges with the current in our favor.
Around Delfshaven, we travelled back in time for a few minutes as we paddled beside an old sailing ship.
Then we crossed the Maas and stopped for a sunny lunch break at the quarantine beach Heijplaat, a historical area where sailors arriving with tropical diseases were once quarantined. Around this time, the current changed in our favor: our quarantine was lifted, and, with a clean bill of health, we paddled back. Unfortunately, the hungry adventurers are still waiting for the cookies Susanne promised to bring for lunch.
In addition to the natural fauna customarily found on the Maas, such as big container vessels, fast water taxis, and tourist speed boats, we caught sight of a yellow water bus bathing in the waters around the SS Rotterdam ship. Thankfully, none of these creatures seemed surprised by the curious kayakers floating nearby.
Along the way, we found the time to pose for some pictures with the Rotterdam skyline in the background. This year, despite the pleasant weather and fantastic view, Pedro decided against going for a swim. On the way back, Pedro, Pim, and Susanne summoned the energy to make a quick detour through the old harbor. Finally, back at the club, it was time to drink some hot coffee and recover while thinking about our next adventure.
